Government Development Agenda

A key development objective of Government is to grow the economy to rapidly achieve accelerated development and industrialisation. The oil and gas and iron and steel industries are known to contribute significantly to the strong economic growth of countries that produce them. It is anticipated that the development of the oil and gas and iron and steel industries will be a source of accelerated growth, poverty reduction and general prosperity to the people of Nigeria. The active involvement of Kogites in the oil and gas and iron and steel development, through local content and participation, is emerging as a major policy issue.

The production of oil and gas and iron and steel will contribute to the socio-economic development of kogi state and indeed bring prosperity to Kogians. It is the desire of the Government and people that the control as well as the benefits from the oil and gas and iron and steel industries revamping and production will remain with kogians.
This desire is however constrained by limitations in the following areas:

·        Finance;
·        Human resource capacity; and
·        Technology.

Recognizing this fact, civil society and the organized private sector is advocating for the government and particularly the present administration, to emplace the goal of developing a local content and participation policy that define actions as well as  ensure that the constraints/challenges bedevilling other extractive resource endowed areas are resolved to enable Kogians take control and thus maximise the benefits to them and the Nigerian state.
The major challenges regarding the resource sub sectors ( like iron and steel and oil and gas may be identified to include:

·        How to develop the oil and gas and iron and steel industries with optimal local content and participation; Enhance state and national development, create jobs;
·        How to manage effectively the potential revenue from oil and gas and iron and steel production and processing and the value chain;
·        How to ensure security for the oil and gas and iron and steel installations and the industries as a whole; and
·        How to ensure environmental sustainability.
